when you start to curve, loop or do other things to lines people tend to cut in line. I have been in a non straight line or two and you have to be vigilant for someone trying to get over
Also conditioning. In kindergarten one of the first things they teach you is to line up in a straight line like there is no other way

I've often thought the same thing, if i'm in the situation, i'll start curving the line so that its not blocking traffic. it drives me crazy to see pple following like sheep and not THINKING or being considerate.

People do this in cars too! it drives my husband and I crazy. Where are they gonna go if the light is red, they just file on in and block the intersection... we have become a society of mindless-drone- zombies I guess.

some people just dont think, they feel that if they move somebody will get in front of them and take there place, so they are rude and carless :)
