a traditional shirley temple - like the one you will get in the bar is as follows.

7-Up over Sprite in a glass. Drop in grenadine (non-alcoholic pomegranite flavored syrup - available at groceries or the liquor store) and garnish with a maraschino cherry. you only need about two tablespoons of grenadine - too much grenadine is very bitter.

you can also substitute the syrup from the maraschino cherries for the grenadine and it's very similarly flavored.

Lemon Lime Soda (7-Up or Sprite) and Grenadine (Cherry Syrup). Ginger ale, club soda or orange juice can be substituted for lemon-lime soda. The basic recipe involves a ratio of 8 oz soda to 1 oz grenadine.
