still believe in the saying, "there are no atheist in fox holes." when you say this you are just lying to yourself, and you are dishonoring the sacrifice these brave men and women made for this country and your freedom.

Well, you and I give the lie to that old saw, don't we? I'm a vet too, and while I spent more time than I care to admit scared shirtless in a friggin' foxhole, I was an athiest then and I am now. You know, in the American Legion we have a saying: For those who have fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected can never know. Those who natter on about no athiests in foxholes will never understand and can never know. That's why you and I need to keep on telling 'em, over and over and over and over again!

Well, seeing as to how you're a vet first
THANK YOU
Second, I think the point is that when faced with mortality, people become more open to the idea of a God. This is actually a point AGAINST Christianity though. It emphasizes that religion serves a psychological purpose. When faced with a crisis, it helps to think that someone/something is looking out for you, and that it will all be ok. That doesn't mean it will be, its just a comforting thought. So, if a foxhole can convert so quickly...doesn't that imply that religion serves a psychological purpose?

They cling to that notion so they can arrogantly claim that anybody who has ever uttered the phrase "Oh, my God" secretly believes in their God. It's a ridiculous notion from start to finish. There are atheists everywhere, even in fox holes. Of course, these are the same people who falsely claim that Darwin found God on his deathbed and recanted everything he'd ever done. They tell the same story about Madilyn Murray O'Hair too. It's all just one big lie designed to make people believe that anybody faced with death will automatically find their God.
And, yes, it is highly insulting to the memory of any brave atheist who has ever laid their life down for this country.

No, there is no dishonor in being scared silly and invoking God to allow you to see your kids again - bravery is standing your ground and performing despite fear ... and the ones that say "I was never frightened once" are lying. So no, there is no dishonor there, you ignorant fool - and if there was no truth to the saying it wouldn't be a saying.

I'd like to find out about the source of "Julia's" response. She seems to know all the answers. They sound so factual, and even grounded in reality.
HuntJames' question is valid. I have seen my fair share of war and I'm an atheist. I didn't need to pray to a god to make it through alive. I relied on myself, my training, and my teammates. That's ALL that matters.

As I have never been in a fox hole I can not in good conscious say whether this is a true of false statement.
Have you ever been in a foxhole?
