As I understand it- if 2 full breed dogs of different breeds have pups their off spring are called cross breeds if one of the pups breeds with any other breed or mixed dogs they are called mixed or Heinz 57. In other words once a dog has more then one breed in them they are cross breeds any more then 2 types of dogs mixed in they are a Mix breed. People often prefer certain traits for one breed as well as traits form a second breed and they will purposely breed them to try to get the traits of both breeds.

It means the dog is a mixture of 2 different breeds. Also known as a mutt.

Ha Ha Ha, I agree with the answer, "Mutt".
We used to call them a Heinz 57. "57" Varieties . Not sure where it originated from, I don't think Catsup, however, the mix could be an interesting one.
If it is a dog you have connected with, you can use your imagination as you go. It will show you it's many different traits, or personalities of it's many breeds.
Just think, more bang for for your buck. $$$
I just love a pound-dog. They sure seem to appreciate a reprieval from possible doom.....

it means that they are not "pure" or 100% of a breed. You can have "full" blooded, that are 100% of a breed that are not AKC registered. The only way to get a dog, that is guaranteed 100% of a particular breed, is to look for an AKC breeder - and pay the price.

IT means it's a combination of breeds with one showing more dominant traits above the rest. It could be a shepard/bernard/lab/chow mix but if it looks like a Shepard it is called a Shepard mix.

Probably mean that the person doesn't know exactly which breeds are in the mix.
