It's all about price point. Leather will cost you much more than fabric. If you like the look of leather and you have the money for it, then go for it.
If you have sticker shock about leather and would rather spend that money on something else, then go with a great neutral fabric- or better yet- find an old couch- perhaps an antique and get it recovered in a fabric that you really love. Then you'll really feel like you put your own personality into the piece.
Furniture is very personal... have fun!

Keep in mind that although leather wears well, it is cold in winter and hot in summer. Also, if it gets cut or torn it's difficult to disguise the repair.
A fabric couch is comfortable to the skin, but will show soiling. The new chenille fabrics are SO comfy and have a nap that hides dirt. If you choose a fabric in a darker color, cleaning shouldn't be a big problem. If possible, ask for a little extra fabric to use in case repairs are necessary down the road.
Have fun!

I think it's interesting that people have skipped around the obvious choice for a leather lover!
Honestly I think you should consider microfiber. A microfiber couch has the soft warm texture of suede with all of the benefits of fabric including cleanability (even more so than traditional apholstry fabric) Microfiber is also usually treated so that it resists water and stains. It's also much cheaper than a real leather sofa but has all the appeal.
Microfiber also has the benefit of coming in a huge range of colors which gives the look of leather but with even more selection. In fact some sofa companys will dye your fabric to your specifications!
I think you should visit a showroom and ask to see some microfiber couches. I think you'll be highly impressed!
Good luck! :D

Why not both?
I work for a furniture store and we carry awesome sectionals with a leather base but fabric cushions, or you could even get fabric couch w/ coordinating leather chair(s).

Your parents have taken real good care of their couch. I've seen leather get all kinds of nicks and scrapes. Unless the leather is a really fine quality, it will show the abuse.

It depeneds, in my case, on your pets. If your pets have long claws, go with fabric, because the leather will get all scratched up. If they shed a lot, go with leather, so it's easy to clean up.

It depends of your expectations, leather is easy to clean and maintain but is not eternal, as any other natural product, leather transform due to degradation of its components, the most obvious is the cracking and peeling of the surface, wich happens after 3 to 4 years of the manufacturing, fabric is chaper but needs constant cleaning, most of today's sofas come with removable slip covers to facilitate the cleaning, and also to replace them whenever you are tired of the same color or texture.

Leather is more smelly and requires special cleaning and conditioning. Leather is a lot of extra work.
