Boy this is a tough one. I've lived my whole life with self-esteem problems and the only thing that helps is to have people close to me emphasizing my good traits, not my bad ones. I'm not sure how old your friend is, but teen years are very important for this. That's when we pick up alot of our ideas about everything in life, including ourselves. Unfortunately I didn't have anyone to help me until in my 30's, so don't know if I'll ever be really ok. So if she's young, just keep praising her and try to get your friends to talk to her first and to be attentive to her. Of course you don't know how her family treats her at home, and that could be a major problem with her esteem, being belittled by her parents and siblings. Just try your best, if you make a difference, you could change the rest of her life.

Is she just afraid to talk to popular people? Maybe she will get along with people who are not that popular. Why don't you spend some time with her and go shopping and talk to her about it? She might just feel comfortable hanging out with people one-on-one or is an introvert. She probably just needs to find other people with similar interests..maybe she should join a club. You can still invite her to group activities, but you cannot force her to talk to others.

If you want to make an omelet you gotta crack a few eggs! Sounds like something she will grow out of but she's got to start sometime. Tell her to just be herself and realize not everyone will like her. But the more she puts herself out there the more friends she will get. And meeting new people will get easier.

REALIZE THAT SHE PROBABLY IS BETTER THAN THEM ANYWAY AND THAT THEIR OPINION OF HER IS NOT REALLY THAT IMPORTANT. POPULAR PEOPLE ARE USUALLY NOT THAT DIFFERENT FROM THOSE THAT ARE NOT
