you should call your bank that issues your checks immediately if you haven't already done so... They will close your account and you won't be held responsible for those checks.

I would open the wallet to look for a contact number, ID number, address or anything like that. If there was no numbers or ways to trace whose wallet it was I would keep it. But I'd try to get it back to the owner, with the cash in it! I wouldn't turn it into the police. In South Africa (where I live) the police force is very corrupt. Very. They would not do the right thing.

go to the police station or sheriffs dep. contact your bank and social security. I'm sorry your wallet was stolen. Your children will get re-issued cards. Some people are just so stupid in this world. I hope you have a better day and week! :)

Reporting to the cops was a smart idea. Obviously call your credit card companies and perhaps the social security administration.
Next time, don't keep SS cards in your wallet. Put them in a safe somewhere.

The link below is from the FTC and gives you all the info you need on identity theft.
Mainly do the following:
Get a police report. You may need it to prove to creditors that the accounts were stolen.
Contact one of the credit bureaus and report that your ID was stolen. They will place an "identity theft" flag on your account preventing people from getting credit in your name.
Get a copy of your credit report and keep monitoring it for suspicious activity.

Seems like you've done a good job so far. I'd start getting a credit report for yours and your kids SSN's, people may use your or your children's SSN's to forge documents or get fraudulent credit cards. Did you have any credit cards in there? Make sure you call them and put a freeze on your accounts.

Transfwer your checking into a new account, call the credit company, like equifax, and let them know that some one has your information and they will tag your account and alert you of any new activiy that may not be yours. Cancel all your credit cards too. Good luck, I hope they catch the thief writing bad checks...
