Heartgard can be given to a heartworm postive dog. Ivermectin is what is in heartgard. The Heartgard will prevent anymore larvae from becoming adult heartworm, but will not kill the heartworms.

No ivermectin kills worms and if the dog is heartworm positive it first must be treated for the heartworms and then put on the preventative for the rest of it's life.
They first must treat the heartworms. The treatment is not ivermectin. It is injectible and must be given by a vet then the dog must be crated and kept quiet.

NO! If you give the dog Ivermectin or any other heartworm preventative, the adult worms will die in a big mass in the heart. You can kill the dog!

If you can't afford the proper treatment, put the poor dog to sleep.

Heart worms never have "symptoms" that are visible until in the very worst of stages. Ivermectin is what is used to kill the microfiliria - or baby worms. Additional treatment with other drugs are needed to kill off the adult worms. This is actually an arsenic derivative, and must be administered by a vet. If you think your dog has heart worms, go have have it tested, and then consult with the vet as to the proper treatment.

No, No, and Nope....
Medication must be given VERY carefully to treat a heartworm positive dog. It is much as chemotherapy. You gotta poison the dog, but just enough to kill a few worms at a time.
The dog must be crated or kept very quiet and still.

Not something for the layman to fool around with.
