I often daydream about other worlds, like I read about in science fiction stories, and I wonder what it would be like to live there, and I think, "I could do so much better than the hero did in a situation like that one!"
However, I don't often daydream about Heaven, though I have put my faith and trust in Jesus, and expect Jesus to bring me there eventually. This suggest to me that the other stories are there to distract me and keep my mind off of Heaven, or off what I am supposed to be doing here.
Now, nobody seriously protests s/f writers and says that their stories are a trap and a snare and lead kids astray and makes them neglect their responsibilities. (Except for that Harry Potter stuff.... hmmmmm.)
The point I am making is this: if there is no afterlife, HOW are you going to kick yourself for having wasted your forelife preparing for Heaven...? Your question implies that you believe in some kind of afterlife, even though you claim not to!
If preparing for Heaven is a waste, we'll never know it.
If preparing not to go to Hell is a waste, we'll never know it.
But if NOT preparing is a waste-- we'll KNOW it.
I think it is a much better idea to invest your time beforehand, instead of learning (when it might be too late) that you could have had things so much better, but bobbled your chances. Granted, it's not pleasant to think about that possibility. But it's best to be prepared, and that is what every prudent insurance salesman in the entire world will tell you.
(Also, your question sounds sort of biased, since you label earth as reality and imply that Heaven is not.)

I live every day on the reality that is earth. In preparing myself for heaven through spiritual growth, it makes every life on earth better, so it's not a waste of time at all. Besides, my experience has shown me that believers live in the truth of life instead of in the fantasy world that most non-believers live in. I say fantasy because every day is spent in a fruitless chase for peace that can never be had, riches that will never be held, dreams that can never truly be realized and pursuits of the flesh that won't even last a lifetime, let alone an eternity.

There really isn't that much "preparation" involved. Jesus already did all the preparing. On my part, all I need to do is trust Him.
Other than that, I don't see how living the best possible life I can live is a waste of time?

If heaven existed, I would probably live there but first I would have to take the grand tour to make sure I like it. Since it doesn't exist, I'll live my one life on Earth without worrying about what happens when I die.

That is a possibility, however I would rather be prepared for heaven then not be and end up in Hell. Besides I have 100% faith that there is a heaven.

That is a very good question. Which is why I went ahead and quit a job last week that I hated. I could have tried to work it out but life is too short for all that bull s h i t. I just left and never went back! I already have another job. It would be nice to think of a hereafter but how do we really know, right?

I, myself would love to have a heaven on Earth. A place where love and peace rule. A place where the color of your skin, the sound of your name, the way to believe, to think and be, the right to seek your own Truths where nobody tells you, you are right or wrong etc etc. As Gandhi said "You have to be the change you want in the world." Keep Seeking. Peace and Love

Preparing is not a bad thing since it keeps people in fear of doing stupid sh*t and then going to hell. Whether it is real or not, those who believe will try and do good to please God which means they are not out killing, stealing, raping etc. And when you think about it, this life sucks with all of the poverty and war and other bad things, so why try and extinguish a dream of a place where none of that exists?
