Why can't they wear elegant dresses that they can wear for other occasions?

Noor, your assumption is just not always correct. Now, there are some brides who just don't have good taste. Becoming a bride-to-be does not automatically grant one any added taste that they did not previously possess! Also possible is the fact that their bridesmaids' body types are so different that the bride is trying to find a dress for all sizes. That is often difficult, if not impossible.

For my wedding in 1998, my bridesmaids' gowns were lovely understated, but elegant, lilac sleveless crepe straight gowns, with a satin bodice, and a shoulder wrap of matching satin-backed crepe. Worn with opera length gloves, they were simple and elegant, and appropriate for all types of formal functions. By shortening the length to knee-length, they would then have an exquisite cocktail dress to be worn without the gloves. I was so happy with their gowns that I wish I had bought one for myself. They, too, were extremely happy with the selection, and have told me so. (If you look at my wedding photos at my 360 page, you'll be able to see for yourself.)

My gift to my attendants were their shimmering hosiery, their gloves, and handmade earrings and necklaces that I personally crafted for each one. They were made of clear yet opalescent pearl-sized beads, that were classic and can be worn for years.

If a bride is thoughtful, considerate, and plans well enough ahead of time, she'll be able to decide on bridesmaid attire that will make the majority happy. You'll never relaly please everyone....unless you are as lucky as I was.

because what you think is nightmarish, others wouldn't. the bride is trying to dress a whole party of girls. you can't expect that everyone will like the dress. All the girls are different shapes and sizes and you have to account for that as well. And no matter how you cut it, all bm's dresses are made cheaply. the fabric is not the best.

My bridesmaids will wear pretty black dresses. They are choosing the dresses themselves so that they will be pleased. Also, they're wearing black so that they can wear them again. I guess it's the taste of some brides to choose awful dresses but it's not all. I have bought two bridesmaid dresses this year. One wad not only ugly but a horrible ice pink that I'll never wear, and the other was a pretty style, but I'll never wear a sage green dress again.

They are not meant to be nightmarish, but something to compliment, but not upstage the bride. My bridesmaids will wear a simple black and white gown that I find very pretty.

That way you don't look better then the bride. My was a medieval wedding. They cost around 50$ to make. I told them it would make a good Halloween outfit. I know I still have two bridesmaids dresses hanging rooting in my closet.

I think the the bridemaids dresses have gotten prettier over the years. My bridemaids loved theirs, but we all went to pick them out together!

I picked out gorgeous floor length simple dresses that were so flattering on everyone. And guess what? They hate 'em. If someone else is picking out your clothes, they're gonna hate it. Period. If I went and bought your clothes that you HAD to wear today, and you had a really important meeting, you'd hate what I bought you. Period. Because you didn't pick it out. I don't even know you, and I know that you and I don't have the same taste in clothes. It's that simple.

I think that they wear them, so that everyone will be a little more attentive to the bride. Eventhough she is wearing a white dress and pretty.

The guys who play bagpipes don't wear dresses, they wear kilts, you numpty. Any idjit knows that a kilt is a man's attire. The Roman army wore tunics that came to mid-thigh length, and nobody called them dresses.

Someone is always going to hate the dress. No matter what it looks like. accept it. You're going to wear a dress you likely won't enjoy.
