Before I left Iraq, I was told that for OIF we were authorized to wear the same patch used on the Class A's. The reasoning was the subdued 'black' 1 was for Desert Storm and the 'red' 1 was for OIF. I've seen very few wear the color patch, and havent found anything in 670-1 or online to substantiate this. Any of you active duty folks ever heard of this?

When I asked about this prior to my redeployment the 2nd Bde CSM told me: "We are the big red one - not the big subdued one."

In short, yes he can. Uniform policies are a command issue and the CSMs are the primary source of these policies. The CSM is acting on behalf of the commander who is going to back him up by supporting his lawful order. While the reg doesn't specify that a particular accoutrement must be worn, it also doesn't specify that Commander's can't mandate certain authorized items. For example, there are several different types of boots that you are authorized to wear, but a commander might specify a specific model of a boot to be worn particularly for a formal event where uniformity is important. The only factor there is that the boot be an issued item.

I'm stationed in Germany right now, and all the 1st ID guys that I know who were downrange in OIF are wearing the Big Red one in red. In other words the colored patch.
