Get him math practice books from a teacher supply store, borders, or barnes and noble. Also, use manipulatives. These can be as simple as buttons or other small objects that he can physically see the numbers.

It is really important to be a team with your child's teacher. If you were concerned with his progress you could have discussed it with the teacher and they could have given you extra assignments to go along with what they are teaching. Also, you can go to your child's school for next year and ask to see the 1st grade curiculum to see exactly what he needs to know, sometimes our kids are right on time and we get paranoid. As far as math goes, repitition, repitition, repitition. and if he thinks he knows it put it on paper, so he can see what he does not know. I have used all of the above.

Schoolhouse Rock.
Computer programs.
Real life practice--counting money, for example. Or a token reward system where he can earn something but must keep track of the points.
If he is really having difficulties, his teacher will pick up on it this fall. But my gut tells me this is a power issue with you more than an academic deficency.

My son says he know it all when it is too hard for him and he doesn't want to try. I think it is much more important that he know his letters and sounds that math skills. My son uses a workbook during the summer vacation, just simple fifteen minutes a day to keep learning fresh.

Please make sure your son learns now and not when he's in the first grade. My daughter just finished the first grade and she didn't know that stuff before she got there and now she's behind almost a full year.

So the teacher decides it is a good day to test the childrens' perceptions. She tells the class, "I have something behind myback it is round and it is red. What is it?" Bobby raises his hand and says "I know teacher I know. Is it a Ball?" The teacher said, "No Bobby, but I like your way of thinking." Susies raised her and and said. "I know teacher, it's an apple." The teacher said "That's right Susie it is an apple." Bobby goes crazy jumping around and yelling at the the teacher "An apple is not round!" The teacher says, "That's enough Bobby, take your seat and behave." Bobby sits down and raises his hand. The teacher asks, "What do you want?" Bobby says, "I have one for you teacher. I have something under my desk. It is long and hard and has a pink tip at the end of it. What is it?" The teacher flushed screamed "Bobby, I am calling your mother about this!" Bobby responded, "Wrong teacher. It is a pencil but I like your way of thinking too."

(Like someone said above) You can get books at some stores that have math problems and exercises in them to help him along. You could also try flash cards, leap pad toys, and things like that.
