The issue of immigration was thrown up by Rep. Sensenbrenner to take up a month or so's worth of the front pages of your news outlet (paper, net, whatever). Politicians have a wide array of issues that are unresolvable (politically) that they carry around. when the presidents polls drop they call upon one of thier lower minions to raise an issue like immigration, death penalty, abortion, flag burning, etc. to grap the front pages. Meanwhile they kill Al Qaid'as #1 man (in truth nothing more than a petty thief that Iraqis rally around, because he is insane enough to challenge the brute force of the US) and they also prop up thier puppet government in Iraq.
The smoke clears, polls go up, issue is changed.
On this particular issue, impotence, fear, and general weakness of the average American (since they are politically powerless) drove people towards hating those in their own class (working class immigrants) through racism and hatred the issue maintained headlines for quite a while.
Then the March on may 1, 2006 put a bullet in the Sensenbrenner Bill, the politicians (mostly Dems) backed off, passed a weaker Bill. The peopel who can actually call inthe National Guard (Schwarzeneggar in Cali) backed away saying troops would only stay a month, for "back-up support", the Right wing nazi groups were outnumbered by immigration rights activists everywhere they went...

and the issue died.

Nothing has happened yet. The border security types can kill any bill but will need to join with either the amnesty folks or the guest worker types to get real enforcement, I'm guessing. I disagree with Enlightenment's description. His communist friends helped stage the marches and he keeps trying to pretend they helped immigrants instead of creating a backlash like hadn't been seen for a while. However, you have to make up your own mind about that. Right now nothing is happening, though.

Which is to say, the Senate hasn't even sent their Bill to the House to go to conference last I heard. Meanwhile the House is saying it will hold hearings on it to shed light on all the hidden provisions, once the Bill gets there. (Who knows, the Senators who don't want light on what they voted for might be holding the bill for their own reasons.)

Yep it is still going on. I am trying to get it stopped with letters to Reps, and senators and by signing the petitions on CAPS web site but who knows if it is being heard. I will do my part to stop the illegal immigration when I see a way to help I will.

Probably not much. People who were born here, and can't spell, will ultimately be disastrous for our country and civilization, however.
