40 minutes is perfect - try this - a tall parking garage ramp. That's what I did. If it gets too hard, just circle one floor until you can go up another level. Establish a base-line of activity, and keep doing it until you're ready for something harder.

Yes, Its good for you that you have decided to change your lifestyle! A 40 minute walk is very good. If you keep up with at least 30 minutes of extra activity every day - you are on your way. Change what you do tho, cause your body quickly get used to activities and try to save energy wherever it can.
If you want to follow-up with food - look into the southbeach-program. Its not a diet, but a lifestyle-change.

Once 40 min. walk is great, two are fabulous! Walk long enough to get your heart rate up. If you walk briskly every day, you may need to add some weights or find a hilly path once your body gets used to it. I commend you for making the commitment to healthy weight loss! Good Luck!

While walking is definately good for you it really won't help you lose any weight if you aren't raising your heart rate. As the others said, swimming or walking faster or walking up hills will help alot more.
Remember, if it were easy it wouldn't be called a work-out.

Walking once a day is plenty, I would do it for at least 30 min but make sure to get your heart rate up. Don't do a leisurely walk or it won't do any good.

What really matters is the distance. Most people prefer to jog or run because it gets them over a longer distance faster, but if you were to walk just as far it would burn as many calories (but not strengthen your heart or muscles) it just takes more time.

listen to your body --- if you've walked for 40 min and you're not working hard, then either walk faster or go for a longer time. you need to feel your heart rate go up and most people will start to sweat. but if you're working hard for 20 min and you're heaving so hard you can't breath, then back off a little.
start graduallly and build up.

They key is to get your heartrate up for at least 30 min. per day. Since it is summer time, try swimming. An easier, faster way to lose weight and tone muscles!

Stop before it hurts. Whatever you can manage do. The more you do it the better you get at it.
No point going all out, making it painful and never wanting to do it again.
It took you a long time to get f@ and it will take a long time to get unf@.
