It means yield, regardless of the color of it. Don't go until no one else is coming. In other words, you don't have the right of way until it is clear.

It is like a stop sign, however if no car is coming on the lane you are merging, you do not need to stop. Just remember, anytime you yield, the traffic going on the lane you want to merge has the right way.

In the US, if you encountered a stop sign (8-sided) that was repainted as a "Yield" sign, it is legally meaningless. Traffic control and regulatory signs are REQUIRED to meet mandatory size, shape, color, height, and placement standards to be enforceable.

I beat the rap on running a "Stop" sign in Texas a number of years ago because it was painted brown with cream lettering and was not reflectorized. (It was done that way to match the "color scheme" of the community.) I argued that it was not a legal "Stop" sign as it was the wrong color and lacked reflectorization. The judge agreed. In less than a week, all of the brown "Stop" signs were gone!

I also got a speeding ticket tossed in Massachusetts because the speed limit signs (in a construciton area) were painted bright yellow-green not white as mandated by law. I was traveling at the "regular" posted limit of 65 MPH, not the illegally posted 45 MPH.

You've been doing correct. At a red yield sign you have to stop and check for traffic and be careful cause that red insures danger. Meaning cars can speed up on you quickly. Take your time at those. GOD BLESS

It's a YEILD sign. It means, if there is oncoming traffic, they have the right-of-way and you must STOP FOR THEM until it is clear to go. If you do not see any cars, it is fine for you to keep going without any sort of pause.
