The younger ones tend to get an attitude about their power. They're like Cartman on southpark "Respect my authoritaah!!" Not all of em of course. I've come across several that're the epitomy of civic service. (a good thing) Too many cops seem to get a high from excercising their power.
Too many others get an "Us against THEM" attitude. Dealing with the scum of society day in and day out gives them the mistaken, idea that everyone's a "perp" but just hav'nt been caught yet. Much of the other cause to their attitude is simple caution. They know that simple traffic stops could lead to them never coming home. Apparently honest citizens pulled over for a light being out have lulled officers into complacency when the person they're talkin to was really dangerous. Some have died as a result.
Don't get me wrong. There's plenty of badged degenerates, but mostly they're good folks with a bad rep. Knowing they can take lot's of my money don't help me to like em either, but ya gotta give credit where it's due.

They have control issues. They were probably either picked on by the other kids as children or, they had controlling parents. Many of them are on a power trip.
Most police that I have come across are alright however, I have run into some serious jerk-off cops who think they have the right to say anything they want even though it was just a liscense checkpoint and we didn't do anything wrong or talk back in any way. That guy was a grade-A, 100% jerk. I seriously considered calling the sheriff's dept. and complaining. That ****** needed a vacation. It's jackasses like that that give cops a bad name. Man, it ticks me off to even think about it.
But I digress. I'd say about 20% of cops are real jerks, but they stand out the most because they're so memorable. Most of them are ok.

Police have a very difficult job to perform. They have to remain impartial and unemotional to things that would make others break. They have to deal with death and HANDLE people you would not want to be in the same room with. They are expected to solve problems in an instant. Problems that may have been brewing for years. People don't call the police to invite them over for dinner. They are only called when things are terribly wrong and people are at their worst. If the police acts they are questioned. When they don't act they are questioned. They are faced with split second decisions that later will be judged and questioned by those who have never been there. All this for a decent paycheck that can easily be earned elsewhere. Don't worry those pricks will solve your problems too.

because they deal all day long with peple who could potentially kill them. As well, some of their fellows are creeps and racistsand on the take, and that causes an enormous amount of stress for the typical officer. Lastly, since a lot of criminals run, or show little regard fro the police officers authority, some cops take that too personally, beating the crap out of a driver who led cops on a high speed chase. Frankly, I feel that the 'contempt of cop' attitude deserves a nightstick beating. Be thankful that your cops are just pricks, and not vengeful dudes like me.

Because they have to deal with people like you and most of the ones that have answered this question with a negative response.
I only know one officer that is a prick. The rest are cool. I don't know why he is a prick. But I'm going to guess it is because he's so dang ugly.
Most cops are cool and respectful as long as you are to them. If a cop is a prick to you, it is most likely because you were first. Be a little nicer next time, prick.

If you realize that police officers do a difficult and dangerous job you are getting the picture. I am in a proffesion that involves dealing with law enforcement regularly and I have come to realise this (I am a truck driver). You will find that cooperating in any given situation where police are involved will go a long way
towards toning down the "attitude".

They have to be. Many of the folks they have to deal with are out of control, emotional basket cases. If they weren't pricks, folks would try to walk all over them. Thus defeating the purpose of their job. Just be polite to a police officer, and he or she will treat you with respect for the most part, as long as you don't get on their nerves.

Thats an easy one and I would be happy to answer it for you all. As an ex service member I can honestly say that most of us/them dont start out as such. Alot of the times dealing with ignorance overtime forms us/them that way. Like take this question for example....straight to the point and probably asked my someone who got hugged too often by their mother.
