I really want to try something out with ImageReady... but it seems I have to buy it?

Try Downloading Adobe photoshop from Any of the torrent sites or from Adobe's Web site.

There's always a way to get something without paying for it, including software. I'll leave the details and risk to you. I do believe ImageReady is included in the trial, as well as with the purchase of Photoshop, but the functionality is probably severly limited. Buy it, or find a program that's free to try what you want.

As far as I can remember, you should get ImageReady together with Adobe Photoshop.
