We have a long-haired miniature dachshund that is 6 months old. He is neutered and very sweet. However, I have noticed that when I take him to the vet or start to hand him off to someone he does not know, he pees on me because he is scared. We take him on walks, to the dog store, etc. quite often and he does great. But, I just don't know what to do about this! If you have any experience with a situation like this, please let me know what you did!

Due to experience, most dogs (especially males) will pee at the vets office.. Other dogs have peed there, plus the scent of other dogs (males or females) will make him mark his territory... There really isn't much to be done about it... Alot of the smaller breeds have that problem when meeting strangers, cocker spaniels are a good example of that.. There really isn't much to be done about it.

My parents used to have a Golden Retriever and I have a Miniature Australian Shepherd and both dogs used to do the same as what your dog is doing. There really isn’t anything that you can do about it.
It’s just that when puppies get excited they pee. Anytime past the 8 month mark you might want to think about evaluating this further though. Especially if this is still going on after the first year.
Every time I had company or anything else that would excite my dog (mainly new people) she would pee…
Yeah, I really wouldn't think too much of it. It’s nothing abnormal.
What we started to do when we knew people were coming over or when I would get home from work or any other even that would cause my puppy to get excited we would just not pay attention to her for the first 5 or 10 minutes when we walked in the door. I know it’s hard to do but w/o attention puppies seem to calm down quite quickly.
Good luck with this!!

My puppy pitt bull did the same thing. She is a year and a half and it is finally going away. They pee because of fear and excitement. Not much you can do about that. He will grow out of it. Except my 4 year old dog pee's everytime we go to the vet. That's fear. After all he is fixed. I'd be scared too.

Poor little guy..... I don't know that there is a lot you could do about this. You could try belly bands. I've used these before with my male greyhounds. I'm SURE you can purchase these on line. Anyway, it's a strip of soft, absorbant with velcro on the ends. You wrap it around the dogs privates and if he pees the belly band catches it. They are washable and don't usually cost that much.

He is scared, that much is obvious. Suggestion - don't "hand him off" to people he doesn't know. Have them sit on the floor, and let him approach them on his terms. Once he is comfortable, then he will be more likely to let them pick him up. It may not be as quick as the handoff routine, but it will make him feel more secure and hopefully stop the peeing.

he is just scared ..most vets have a place for them to pee just outside take him there first then take him inside ...give him a treat and praise him alot for being so good ..give him a treat when the doc visit is all done and soon he will associate good treats with doc it might be easier the next time...

Dogs do that when they are excited or nervous....
there really is not much you can do except try to make the dog feel comfortable around the VET............
and as far as handing the dog off to others let him get to know the person before you give it to them......
He is afraid he will not get to see you again. and he is marking his territory

My dog became carsick everytime we took her to the vet...so, I found a vet that does house calls. Why add the stress to the dog?
