Because slavery is a good thing... :(

NOT!

There are so many things modern society has decided, even though the Bible has no prohibition for it, and even declares it worthwhile, is wrong.

Motherbear: Your answer is factually wrong. According to the book of Exodus, God delivered the Hebrews from slavery, however in Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, He then gives specific regulations on the trading, sale, purchasing, and use of slaves. He never prohibited it and even during Jesus' time there was legal slavery in Isreal.

All of them are examples of why we cannot use the Bible to dictate modern society.

Mashuga: Oh!! Now I get it. Slavery is ok if you feed them well and let them go free after seven years. Somebody should have told Abraham Lincoln!

Because slavery is not prohibited, but it is not the slavery we think of today. The Israelites were Pharoah's slaves for 400 years, but God told us at Sinai that His people, Israel, will treat their slaves differently from other nations. God's chosen people will treat slaves as part of the family. They will have protection and rights and will be given their freedom after 7 years including enough assets to survive on their own. Our laws are written for all to see and apply to leaders as well as slaves.
Read more about revelation at Sinai -- it's an incredible story!

It doesn't prohibit slavery, but it does tell you how to treat slaves. The tiny book of Philemon, written by Paul, tells of a plea from Paul to spare any punishment done to a slave that strayed from his master. Paul preaches love, acceptance, and the abolishing of slavery in this tiny book. Paul has been known as one of the most influential apostles of all time. I would think his words speak volumes towards abolishing slavery. And his words are found in the Bible.

Because all societies at the time the Bible was written practiced some form of slavery.

There are rules for the liberation of slaves after 7 years, and especially 7x7 plus 1 =50 Jubilee years. Ex.21:2, Dt. 15:12-18.
Lev.25:39 shows slavery not acceptable for your brother. St. Paul gave rules for slaves but also dealt with freed slaves ie Phil.1:16 or change from slave to brother. It seems he was just keeping the social laws of his time, but showing how to live as Christians and law-abiding citizens in whatever circumstance. God writes straight with crooked lines so He allowed us to 'evolve' socially in our conscience. We are very slow.

Because since the "dawn of times" there has always been slavery. Most people don't (want to)realize that Africans enlsaved one another LONG before the white man came into the picture.

Hmm an almighty God makes people succomb to his will whatever his whim may be. A god who can punish someone for whatever reason he wants (job). A god who forces his people to praise, worship, and pay tribute to him.

Now why would a god like this want to introduce a blasphemous idea that slavery is a bad thing? He might lose his slaves.

Certain concepts are modern ones, such as liberty and free will. Socially, we have evolved from biblical times and no longer consider slavery an acceptable fact of life.
