Female dogs are in heat before and after they start bleeding.. The vulva area will swell a bit before she starts to bleed.. after she is finished bleeding, she is still in heat, so becareful with her around males.. once her vaginal area reduces in swelling, back to its normal size, her heat is completed... It should happen about every 6 months.

After the dog starts swelling and spotting, she will be in heat for 3 weeks. About midway thru that time, she will be receptive to males and you should keep her seperated from any males if you do not want to get her bred. Also I would have her spayed if you do not want her to have pups.

Yes, she will be swollen, she will secrete a fowl odor and may or may not bleed. You can fix this by spaying her, if you choose to. Also, make dogs will always be able to let you know she's in heat.

Good luck!
