I think the best way to get him over the fear is to not force him, and just take it slow. Let him see that sand isn't going to hurt him, but don't make him touch it if he doesn't want to. If he sees you play in the sand and hangs out on a chair or towel, then as time goes by he might get curious and try on his own. Let him see that you're having fun, that should help, too. He might not get over his fear on your trip to the beach, but it will be a step in the right direction.

If you have access to sand now, you could gradually introduce him to it. Instead of the whole beach, take a little sand and put it in your yard or on your porch. Stand in it yourself and show him that it is ok. Have him dip a toe in and then and then let him touch it. Show him the difference in the texture and what he could do with wet sand. The more he enjoys it and sees that it is ok and doesn't hurt or bother him, it will be easier to bring him to the beach and enjoy your vacation.

Try sitting in the sand yourself with your child near your side. Show him how much fun it is to run thru your fingers while you smile and make happy sounds. Also try wetting the sand and show him how he can use a play shovel and pail to 'make' things. Make this a daily ritual. It will take patience so don't give up too soon.

my baby was scared of water in her face, so i had a really hard time washing her hair, it was always a fight and now i can't get her out of making a pool in the tub and when we're at the pool/beach she keeps saying "look" & puts her whole head under the water. the moral of this story is that if u let him feel the sand little by little he won't be afraid maybe u can take it in your hand let him touch it w/one finger or something.

Sand is really abrasive. Your baby's skin is 10 fold more sensitive than yours is. Don't try to 'rough' him up, just let him stay on the towel. When he is interested enough, he will explore. try playing in the sand next to him, showing him how to play with it, shape it, and smash it. Lots of smiling will encourage his interest.
REMEMBER baby faces sunblock and onesies to cover the skin, beach umbrellas and sunglasses!

just keep trying. It's new to him and he may be a little scared. Get the whole family in the sand and let him see that it's okay.
