Find some of those disgusting pictures they showed us in High School. And get your facts straight about the little things nobody thinks of. (i.e. ~ Smoking one cigarette a day takes so many minutes off your life, and stuff like that).

I have always been one to be turned off by smoking due to my parents so i don't know if starting up deliberately to put them on a guilt trip to kick a chemically addicting habit would be such a genius idea...?

And seeing and hearing the factoids about it makes it even more rock solid (for me at least).

Also please have them visit the site below. Good information here. If you don't have them visit it, then maybe you should and try to inform them orally...? Just some suggestions?

good luck!!

Personally, I never had to talk to them. My dad smoked a pipe and cigars, died at age 60 from intestinal cancer. My mom smoked several packs a day, but stopped at age 50 cold turkey after having a religious revelation. I even found a few packs from the old days (could tell by the tax stamps) that she must have kept around as proof that she overcame.

As to how you can intervene on their behalf, you might try the site "phillipmorris.com" that I have seen advertised on TV. Although it seems more geared for parents talking to their children about not smoking, I guess the reverse would work, too.

I also just checked, smoking.com has a bunch of links about quitting smoking.

There is also an alternative medicine clinic in the town where I live that is run by a doctor from India. I visited one day as a computer repair technician and they have some really gross posters showing the lung damage and mouth cancers caused by smoking. If you can get your hands on some of those, that might do it, too!

Good luck!

You can't make them stop smoking. You can let them know you are concerned but that's about it. They're going to do what they want to do regardless of it being destructive. My cousin learned this when he kept obsessing over my uncle smoking a pack a day & trying to get him to stop. It didn't work. Last year, after suffering emphezema & other illnesses from weakened immune system (from the lungs being damaged by all those years of smoking) he died at age 63. Very sad...

Find another way to release that anger. Take a walk outside for some fresh air and breathe. If you find yourself reaching for a dull object, use a rubber band instead. I know it sounds dumb, but for the time being, until you can find a healthier way to release anger, put a rubber band on your wrist and snap it instead of tearing your skin with a sharp object. It wont leave scars. Honestly though, the best way to stop all this is to talk it out with someone. Don't harm youself, its not worth it. The people making you feel this way aren't worth the extra pain, tears, or stress you put on yourself after it all. Harming youself only adds to the pain. It doesnt make anything better in the long run. I wish you the best! (: If you're already somewhat close to your dad, hold on to it. Talk to him. I understand you cant talk to your friends, I have the same situation with mine. But whoever is closest to you now, regardless if it's strong or not, talk to them. Take a chance on someone.

I really think that parents don't listen to their children when they try to boss them around. Quitting smoking is something that they need to decide to quit, themselves. Smoking is one of those things that the more people tell you to stop, the more you are going to do it. The only thing that you can do is to avoid it yourself and make the decision not to do it. There is nothing you can do for your parents. Sorry!

First you need to find the right time to start a conversation ..serious one..may u can tell them that on sunday before dinner u wanted to share some concerned and wanna know if they could help u! or your birthday
then start explaining the problem of ur friend ( give a fictitious name) and relate how u wanna help the parents of ur friend to stop smoking and finally say " that friend of mine is me" and asked them to give his gift and u should also give some commitment to them .. say by removing a defect that they see in u.

What worked for my mom - I bought some of those pop-it fireworks (the ones you throw at the ground to make a bang noise) and loaded some of her cigarettes with them so when she lit up, it would spark and make a big bang noise - nothing that would hurt her of course. She was too scared to smoke again, because she didn't know when I would put more in her cigs. Scare tactics always work.
