Okay, first and foremost you need to find the cause of the diarrhea. There are several very dangerous dog diseases/virus where diarrhea is the first sign, such as Parvo. It could also be as simply as the dog needs to be wormed, you can't just let those go, as they also can become deadly. Be very concerned if there is blood in the stool, or there is a mucus look to it - I know, totally gross to check it out, but it's necessary. If the dog has had the runs for more than a day or two, I really, strongly suggest that you take him to the vet to to a fecal test. After you get those results, your vet can instruct you as to what you should be feeding the dog.

I have five greyhounds with VERY sensitive stomachs. When mine have gotten diarrhea I fix them PLAIN rice--no salt, no butter, no nothing. I also give them plain or vanilla yogurt. The live active cultures in there really help with the diarrhea and soothe the intestinal lining. If the diarrhea has been too bad I have let them go a day without food but give them as much water as they can handle. Diarrhea will dehydrate a dog just as quickly as it can in a human. The food tends to make it worse sometimes.

You can feed a dog canned pumpkin for bot diarrhea and constipaption. Actually a little each day will help keep it regular. How much depends on how big your dog is. If the stool is bloody or of it continiues, your dog should be seen by a vet.

Both of my dogs had AWFUL diarrhea last week...the vet put them on boiled chicken and rice, and said to give them 3 tbs Pepto Bismol up to three times a day. It's difficult to get a dog to drink PB--they won't do it. So I held their mouths open and my husband blew strawfuls down their throat. It sounds mean, but we basically followed them with the steam cleaner for three days, so it was necessary. It's also safe to give them one Immodium tablet twice a day. It really does help! I made sure to ask the vet first though.

A great way to help his tummy is to feed him a little pumpkin from a can (found in the baking aisle) or cottage cheese....just a litle at a time though - too much will hurt him worse

Well peadialight, the stuff you give to sick kids, might just work. If you get the iced pops he will eat them. I'm not 100% sure but if you want call a vet and just talk to them, that doesn't mean you have to go in though
good luck and hope he feels better!

Don't change his diet... Have you recently changed the brand of dog food he's been eating, or tried a different type of treat? Normally it's something new that he's been introduced to that will cause the change in bowel movements.

Plain yogurt will help. He may need to be wormed, or have giardia. Both can be taken care of with a 3 day course of double dose fendbendazole wormer (Safeguard for livestock) it is very safe.

If this has been going on for more than a day or so, go to a vet! It could be a sign of illness. He is also at risk for becoming dehydrated.
