I moved to Florida last year with my fiancee and my entire family lives in California. I thought after a year I would be less homesick. Its too expensive to fly home and I don't have a lot of vacation from work. how can I deal with this? The homesickness is not getting any better and I am getting depressed.

I've been living accross the country from my family for three years. I'm married and have children of my own. There is no place like home, but I'm convinced that some places are better than others. My husband and I have spent a lot of time talking about our future and where we want to live. I think this is an important thing to agree upon. There might have to be some give and take, but it really helps to agree on where to live.

We decided to move closer to home, but not right back home because we do want our own space, yet have our families within acceptable traveling distance.

Hope you guys can work something out.

You need to get involved with activities where you are. Find things to do that you would not have been able to do back home---things that might be unique to where you are now. This will help you not to feel depressed and lonely. You should phone, e-mail or actually WRITE LETTERS as often as possible to your family back home. Exchange pictures. Keep them as close in your life as you can. I lived a thousand miles away from my family for three years when I was first married---it was tough, but it did get better as time went on.

My best friend goes to the University of Michigan (we are from Boise, ID) and she had a really hard time when she first moved out there. But as she made more friends and developed her own way of life out there, she began to feel more at home in Michigan. Check a place like Yahoo groups to see if there are any groups set up by people in your area that are from out of state. the more you develop your own life and friends in florida, the less sad you will feel about missing california. also, things like a cellphone with free long distance, instant messenger, and email will help you keep in touch with your fam. i hope that helps. i know it sucks to miss people you are close to. but soon you will be close to people in florida too! :)
