Be damned glad that your 150 pound dog is friendly!!!! In my experience, Akitas do not make very good watchdogs. They don't bite anyone unless they're in a pissy mood and then they usually bite a family member. All the crap you've ever heard about beatings or feeding the dog gunpowder to make him mean are bogus, abusive crap. If you teach your dog to bite, you will have a huge liability problem - you and your family can be sued or even go to jail if your dog injures someone. Your homeowner's insurance policy may refuse to cover you if you have a dangerous dog. Most dogs never get to bite someone breaking into your house - they bite your friends or visitors. How would you feel if your dog mauled someone's child? If you really need protection that bad, get a gun. At least a gun doesn't have a mind of its own.

Given your history (and your dogs) you should have no fear if a burglary was to happen again. You should know that dogs are protective animals and should a stranger that your dog is being nice to happen to threaten you or a family member, he will think twice about being so nice! I have had an overly aggressive dog who did not like strangers and I had to put him down. He bit three people and I feared he would go after children. The last thing you need is a law suit, and if you are walking your dog and he bites a stranger who is walking by, you are in trouble! If you train your dog to be mean, he will be mean to everyone, children, adults, and possibly your family. Be glad he has already shown he is protective of your home and family - you don't need to train him to do anything else.

Akitas are great dogs. Very smart and loyal. I would not want a dog that hates strangers. A large dog like that could be very dangerous if he is trained to attack. Sounds like he is very protective of your home and I am sure if there is another burglary in your home, he will protect it the same way that he did before. I had one a few years ago. Loved him to pieces. One day a neighbor came over to fix a flat tire and my Akita bit him, because he thought he was doing something bad. He had never bit before or after. He was just "protecting" us.

I would not recommend protection training for an Akita--let alone attack training. At 2 the dog is probably still developing. Large dogs can take a while to mature. These are very protective animals and should not need any further training.

There is no need to train *most* dogs. They're territorial and protective. You should be thankful he's nice to strangers. That would probably change if one was outside your door at 2 in the morning ;-)

Don't train him to be mean to strangers. Accept that and enjoy it. As for protection training. It's a natural instinct, he has it, he has proved it. When he senses that you are frighten or upset, he will be there to do what ever he needs to do. I have a German Shepherd that has had NO training as far as protective training, but she has gotten people away from me that were annoying, not necessarily threatening. Dogs know. Let your dog be a dog and do his job. He's already proved that he knows what to do.
