I have five ex-retired racing greyhounds. Now, granted these are not small dogs like you'd asked about but a greyhound makes a wonderful indoor pet. They have very little doggie odor, minimal shedding, sleep most of the day away, and a laid back and friendly personality. Most greyhounds are very misunderstood because the general public thinks they require a lot of excercise. This is so wrong! They are very lazy and laid back dogs. My own greyhounds sleep most of the day away. The only "problem" with a greyhound (and I don't really see it as a problem) is that they MUST at all times be walked on a leash or turned lose in a fully fenced area. Greyhounds are sight hounds and at the tracks are trained to chase. THey can see up to one mile away. If a bunny or a squirell peaks their interest they are GONE like the wind. And let me tell you....a greyhound can run MUCH faster than a human!!!

Wiener dogs are great for apt. life and they potty train very quickly. Do not get any kind of terrier, as the energy level is too high for the situation you are describing. French Bulldogs (very small) are great dogs for no yards and they are very intelligent, with no little health problems, unlike thier big brothers the English Bulldog. Poms and Shitzus are extremely furry, shed and are sometimes finicky/independent. Chihuahuas are usually very protective, and the standard sizes (not toy or mini) are much sweeter... make sure you meet them before you adopt. Pugs, while very affectionate, are very hard to potty train as the breed goes. The best dog for your situation may be a mini or toy poodle. They potty train EXTREMELY fast, and are smart. They do not shed at all (this is a fact, not opinion) and are well suited to not having a yard. They like to cuddle and train well. Good luck in your search for a dog!!

Peekapoos are the best dogs ever! I have one. A male dog named "Puppy". He is almost 2 yrs old now. He is the best dog I have ever owned throughout my life. No behavior problems and trains very easily. Just remember to put your new puppy into obedience school. You'll have really great success with your new dog if you decide to do this. I just put Puppy through it and he caught onto the commands right away. Peekapoos are really low energy so they can be left alone throughout the day. There really great with kids. Puppy has never bitten anyone and even when my 9 month old is pulling on him he does not bite him! There really sweet dogs and SO ADORABLE!!! You'll fall in love. Oh I also live in an apartment so there good for that kind of living. Definetly consider this kind of dog. I really have never encountered a dog this sweet and very loyal.

Don't get a Dachshund. I've known about five and they all have issues. Like peeing when you look at them, hiding under beds/chairs/tables and jumping out and biting you, fighting with dogs who could eat them in one bite...

You should probably go to a Humane Society or a shelter and adopt a dog from there. That's what I did and I got a dog who was already house trained and everything. And a lot of times they'll be able to tell you something about it so it's not like you're just going out on a limb.

Good luck!

Grey Hounds are suggested for apartments so I am assuming that town homes are just the same. The thing Worth not having a yard means you need to walk them twice as long and more frequently. You and your fiance will be the source of time for how soon your pup is house trained. It depends on how consistent you are and how well of a schedule he can have!! A puppy is a lot like a baby...time to spend with him to bond and a schedule is key for feeding and bathroom breaks.

I know what you mean, about cats that is! I have a rottweiler. He's adorable. Especially when he was a puppy. Now he's a fuzzy-bear-like. Very smart; we trained him in one month. Rottweilers are very good with kids too. Very protective. I had rottweilers all my life, since I was 6 years of age. We didn't have no problems raising them or didn't receive complains. All dogs need attention though, are you ready for it? They do need space and time to play. Feeding time, at least once a day. Walks for 30 minutes 2ce a day. Dogs are like family, they understand you in every way. But you have to have patience, otherwise they won't listen to you. If you need more information, just ask.

Go to the local kennel or look in the paper for the advertised mixed puppies. Mixed dogs are healthier and happier - better personalities. Get a puppy so that you raise it yourself and it is your dog. Go to puppy classes with your dog. I prefer Shepherd mixes - I have 3 now. No problems with house training - they almost train themselves. Very smart. For playful, try shep-lab mix. Myth = small dogs are better for small houses. Wrong - big dogs do great in any home - but all dogs need exercise. 15-20 min walk is good. Rescue a dog and you will reap great rewards. If you don't want a puppy or don't have the time to train one - rescue a dog - call the local SPCA and/or check out their website. Dogs to avoid - spaniels (too hyper for inside), terrier (terrorize you! and loud barkers), reconsider your small dog idea. Medium size mixed dog would be perfect. Try shep mixes. Hope that helps!

I will add another vote for adopting a retired racing greyhound. I live with four in a townhouse and they are wonderful. A retired racer comes to you crate trained - which transfers to house training very easily. They are very happy being leash walked as they are a low-energy breed and they sleep as much as 20 hours a day so they do well in working families. If you are interested in learning more about the breed or to look for an adoption group in your area, check with Greyhound Pets of America http://www.greyhoundpets.org/

You do need a cat, sorry.

Dogs need exercise. They also can't pee in a litterbox, so it's not fair to lock them in a house for 9 hours a day every day. How would you feel if you had to pee for 8 hours but weren't allowed to?

Why not get a small pet like a cavy, rat, or hamster?

A Chihuahua is the best dog for apartment/townhouse living. I would suggest getting 2 so they would always have a companion to play with. They are cute, smart, cuddly, small, very loyal. You can train them to pee pads or to use a litter box. I use baby crib pads to train mine on and it works great. Get girls, so they will not mark like a boy will.
