My husband has kidney stones and they will not pass. He has had to have surgery to remove them before. Do you know of anything to prevent them or what causes them? Any advice will help. Thank you.

Drinking more water and eating a low protein, low nitrogen, low sodium diet will prevent them from coming back. There is still some debate on what causes them exactly.

I've had kidney stones before. You really can't prevent them from happening. That is the same question I asked my doctor when I was in the hospital. They said nothing really, the unfortunate part is its hereditary. What worked for me was I drank a lot of cranberry juice. If there's any trader joe's around your area, you can buy the cranberry pills, that will help with passing the kidney stone because one it helps break it down, and also you urinate a lot more. Do you know what kidney stone is made up of? Is it calcium build up?

I've had them and I sympathize with him! Drink high amounts of citric drinks, like lemonade. Lay off the protiens and stay well hydrated. Once this one is removed they can find out what type of stone it is and give you a better diet plan. Unfortunately they are usually genetic, so if you have one, you can expect more.

Careful with vitamin C, that's all I know. My father-in-law gets them and both he and the rest of his family have always been skeptical about too much vitamin C because it causes kidney stones, so don't take too much of that. That's all I know, sorry... Try wikipedia :-)

YES. Try staying away from dairy products, and drink LOTS and LOTS of Cranberry Juice, and even more water! Good luck Rocky!
