She is 12 years old and seems very happy and healthy, but the vet says her kidneys are failing, and i have to give her iv fluids 2x a week. We have been doing this for a few weeks, and i just want to know if she has a good chance of living years, or just a few months?

It definetly depends on the dog. Giving the fluids and giving her a special kidney diet will make her kidneys function longer even at less capacity. I worked at a veterinary hospital and knew many dogs that lived for several more years with ailing kidneys. there are also drugs that can be used to help the problems that go along with kidney failure.

The symptoms do line up with kidney failure - excess urination, excess drinking, and dilute urine - but there are a number of other things it could be as well. A number of things, for example, could be making her thirsty. She drinks a lot, therefor has to pee a lot, therefor it's dilute, and therefor she has accidents in the house because she can not hold it as long. Wait for the blood work, that will show a lot on the function of the kidneys. No use in getting upset. It's hard to think something could be wrong with your dog, but the only thing you can do now is wait for the blood work, so why get upset about things that MIGHT be.

My Wheaties had kidney failure and eventually died of it. However, she lived 2 years after she was diagnosed with it and we started treatment. Toward the end, she really struggled, but for most of the time she was being treated, she did well with it. I really feel for you. Wheaties was 19 years old when she succumbed, but the two years extra I had with her were precious and she wasn't suffering or in pain.

I hope she has MANY good years left! It's hard when a family pet becomes sick. Sending her loads of hugs and kisses from cyber space!
