We went to war with the Hussein government in Iraq to accomplish three goals.

1. To remove the Hussein government, which was thought by everyone at the time (including the French and Russians who had very good reasons to protest at the time if they disagreed) to have or be very close to acquiring WMD.

2. To remove a government known to harbor terrorists.

3. To create a representative form of government in the heart of the middle east. It has been proposed that such a government if successfull would eventually cause a revolution in the other countries of the region.

Edit:

About this canard that we are only over there for the oil. If that were true then why didn't Bush senior cross the river and take Hussein out back in 1991. The vast majority of the American public was behind him at the time; so I don't see why if "we are only over there for oil", he didn't take Iraq's oil then.

Oil is a commodity that is as critical to our technological civilization as the food supply, and it is part of the reason we are over there, but it isn't the only reason, and it isn't even close to being the major reason.

Contrary to the premise provided by the left, the connection with oil is that we are involved in the war in the middle east in part to maintain a free and open supply of oil for the entire world.

Part of the reason that oil prices in the U.S. are going up is that demand in the far east is going up. We haven't seized the oil supply, nor have we prevented China and India from gaining access to middle eastern oil. We have simply prevented a tyrannical regime from continuing to threaten the world oil supply.

Reading anything more into "the oil connection" reveals either a political agenda or ignorance on the part of the person making the comment.

It's about OIL... nothing more... no Weapons of Mass Destruction... no giving Iraq a democratic form of government... no taking down Saddam... the war is STRICTLY about OIL... and that arrogant President tells you that in the intitials of the operation: (O)peration (I)raqi (L)iberation. The president LIED to the American people to get the war started and he is STILL lying to the American people

Officially to start with, it was about "weapons of mass destruction" being secretly held by Saddam; unoffically, it was about oil & our huge consumption needs. Then we came to realize Saddam did not treat his people well & tortured them. Our soldiers were told the people needed to be saved & considering what they found when they arrived, they felt it was right they had invaded Iraq. Now, there are people of Islamic or Muslim religion who have vowed death to all who embrace freedom from what they themselves believe is right.

Removing Saddam from power. Done.
Establishing a democracy. Done.
Training police and military to take over when we leave. In progress.
