His best bet is to work in the UK for a few years in a specialized field for a large company and get a transfer with the same company to the US on a L1 visa. I did it this way. You can then live and work in the US for at least 5 years.

However, I was also engaged to a US citizen at the time and have since got married and a green card.

Visa?

What is this visa you speak of, my friend?

its easy to live and work in the USA without a visa. Just ask all the illegals here.

But seriously, it is very difficult for someone like him to be accepted as a resident. That's why most people just decide to come here illegally. We have illegals here for all over the world: South Koreans, Mexicans, French, Germans, and even English.

He can do it, but will have to get a really good immigration lawyer.

British citizens don't need a visa to visit US.
But if he wants to stay and work legally, he needs to get a job offer and apply for a work visa at the US embassy/consulate in UK.
Ot he can apply at a US college, but studying in US is only for the rich, unlike in Europe, where education is close to free.

My suggestion is: get a tourist visa and travel to the US to make good contacts to get a job or at least a nice wife. That's what lot of people do and it works ok most of times.

As far as I know, the quotas for British citizens have been reached ... it will be very difficult for him to get a green card, unless he marries an American girl ....
