If you can locate a good quality affordable used car - then I say do it. If you can wrestle some kind of warranty on it as well - bonus.

Keep in mind, new cars are great - the feeling of knowing no one else has driven it, the new car smell - but keep this in mind - once you buy a new car, as soon as you register it, take $5,000 off of the value.

Go with a used car (be certain it's good quality and good value) and do what you like with it. That way, if you do happen to damage something, chances are greater you can find the part in a local scrapyard instead of having to pay through the nose at the dealer.

I would buy a car that has just a year, and the rest of the money i would hook up the inside. I like the exterior hookups but i dont see the point to waste money on looks of your car. What i would waste money on is the comfort ant technology inside for you to be comfortable, not for someone else to see how hooked up your car is.

I always recommend a good used car over a new one any day.
Let someone else take the $5,000 hit you loose as soon as the tires hit the street.
