They can all be black, the color of the connector's outer part is color coded to make it easier to determine which is which from one end of a cable mess to the other

COMPONENT AND COMPOSITE CABLES ARE THE SAME, THEY DON'T HAVE DIFFERENT IMPEDANCES OR RATINGS!!!!

I would sure try it before I went out and spent money on new cables. The worst case I can think of, assuming correct installation, is you might get a marginal signal which would translate into less than desired performance. In the event the performance is substandard you can replace the cables with the fancy ones you talk about any time it is convenient. Electricity doesn't care what color a wire is and as long as the characteristics of the wire is correct it should work fine.

The three colors are only there to make it easier for you to keep track of what plugs into where. The colors of the cable match the color of the hoes on the DVD player. But the cables themselves are just standard cables. You can use any.

I have not tried it, but the component and composite cables have different resistance and other stuff, I cannot remember. I did do a lot of research when buying my components for home theatre.

However, here is a good site to begin researching all the different cables.

I hope this helps.
