I have placed a second fax machine on the line, and it has the same symptoms as the previous machine. The fax manufacturer says the machine is not at fault, and the phone company says that it can't be the phone line because we can still send faxes. I need any help finding the source of this problem.

Check the line and the phone number - Plug in a regular phone set. Verify you have dial tone (should be good, this is to double check the phone since you can send) Call the number for the fax and verify the phone rings. Answer the line and verify a connection.

Verify the fax machine is in Auto-Answer mode. Auto-Answer may not be the default for that machine.

As others have mentioned, verify paper and toner is loaded properly.

Use a "switching device" in one position the incoming call goes to a phone, in the other position the incoming call goes to the FAX Machine. The "switch" must be thrown manually, I don't know of any "automatic" switching devices. If that still dosn't do it get a seperate phone line for the FAX. Nye

make sure the fax is in auto answer on and after a small number of rings.
How many phones are on this line? you are usually allowed about 4 (with a REN of 1 each)
If you have two faxes on the line, do you expect to get two copies printed one on each fax ?

Look in your manual for the number of rings before answer. It may be set to a high number or not at all.
Also the fax machine shouldn't be polarity sensitive but you could try reversing the red and green wires in the telephone jack (or the white/blue and blue/white wires. It should be one or the other)

1) Check one more time the manual.
2) Move the fax to another line ( friends line and check the fax)
