Depends on the breeds.. In most parrot breeds, or cockatiels you can tell by the colouring.. Males are usually more vibrantly coloured to attract the females.. Robins for example, the males have the bright red breasts while the females are brown. Cardinals as well, the males are the bright red while females are more of a dusty red to brown colour.. Not as pretty. With certain species you can tell by size, the male will sometimes be larger than the female, but alot of times the female is bigger to protect the nest and eggs. In other species you'd have to take the bird to the vet to either have them pull blood, or some places can send off some feathers to the lab and have them checked..

I know I'm going to sound like an activisty "save the animals" thing here but hear me out! Birds aren't meant to be sitting in a cage all day. Even parakeets. They ought to be played with at LEAST once a day for 30 minutes. Parakeets are even capable of talking (youtube "budgie talking" they're pretty funny). Birds can get depressed if they don't get enough attention, or if they don't have enough toys. They rip out their feathers and scream. It's awful. If you get birds for your husband, be sure he wants them. A lot of people buy pets for their significant others only to have them tossed in a few months. Parakeets aren't the brightest creatures, but they do need attention :) Be wary if a pet shop tells you the "genders" of the budgies. They often have no idea and say what they want so you believe them and buy them. The best, reliable way is genetic testing. IF that's done the sellers will give you documentation or proof.

With most birds you can't tell if they are male or female you will have to get a blood test done on them. Some birds you can tell by color but not on the ones you mentioned.

Males are usually brightly colored while the females are dull looking. Also males have prettier songs
