A tortie is a calico cat. Just different markings. Most common are black, red, and light brown but they can also have some white. Then you have the most common calico--bright markings that are white, black and orange. There is also a dilute calico that is gray, white and orange. Did you know that if a cat has more than three colors it is almost always female? If it is a male it is extremely rare and they will be sterile. I have two bright colored calicos and one tortie and all three are psycho!

Usually not, but especially if you have a boy cat as all Calicos are female - it's an X-linked gene. Torties are beautiful and are in a class all their own! Calico's spots usually don't form any specific shape.

Your cat feels like she is unquestionably a torbie. A torbie is comparable to a tortoiseshell or calico different than that her black components have tabby markings instead of being good black. As for being a calico, it is my wisdom that calico cats have white based coats with patches or orange and black. The greater white the cat has, the brighter and greater defined the patches of the different hues. A cat that purely has small components of white is seen a tortoiseshell and white cat.

Calico can be mixed with usually 3 or more colours.. The most common would be black, orange, brown, and/or white... Though I do believe for it to be considered calico it has to have white markings.. Though, I could be wrong.

The only difference I've noticed between a tortoiseshell and a calico, is the absence of white.
Calicos are more ''bright'', usually with white playing a big part.
Tortoiseshells are more ''dark'', usually with black playing a big part.

Tortoise shell is similar to calico but they are not the same... Tortoise shell means that they are black with small shades of other colors, Calico means they have bigger and brighter shades of color.

A calico has white on it somewhere. A tortoiseshell has no white on it at all. Simple, easy, to the point.
