well, you have to assume that the genesis story is what really happened first.
i think it would've happened. curiosity is much stronger than satan i think. eventually, adam and eve would wonder, like all people do, why is this tree off limits? what's so special about it? why won't god tell me what happens when i eat the fruit?
so i think that god intended for man to eat of the tree of knowledge, and satan accelerated the whole situation, just to make sure it happened. i think god wanted man to have knowledge and free will, and essentailly, eating from the tree was the first act of free will. eve acted on her curiosity. i don't think god was really mad either, i think he wanted for people to eventually die so they could go to heaven and be just souls.
as an atheist i think bible stories are actual pretty good and have lots to tell us about humanity. if we only look.

Yes, everyone would still have sinned. Satan is not responsible for sin, we all are. The actions of our sins are the result of something that is wrong with us and that something that is wrong is sinfullness. That is to say, we sin because we are sinners; we are not sinners because we sin.
Just because a person is free to do whatever they want doesn't mean that they must do any particular thing. For example, you could have flown to Costa Rica today. But no one made you go there. If you do something like that, it's because you chose to--not because someone left things open so that you could have if you wanted to.
If you were not left to have your own free will, then really you are not your own being. You'd be more like some kind of lifeless program running in some computer. The fact that you have this free will is what makes you an indepentent being.

Going from the non-traditional standpoint, Satan isn't really the bad guy. In the Old Testament, he was just there to test people's faith(like Job). He's just an angel with a job to do, like all of the other angels. He's not the Great EVIL Adversary a lot of people think he is.
Humans have free will, and that leads to trouble.^_^
(and yes, I am still an atheist--I just know this stuff 'cuz my mom digs the whole Jewish thing.)

If Satan did not exist then the world would be perfect. No one would make any mistakes. Satan was the one who convinced Adam and Eve to eat the apple. If they had listened to God then the world would be perfect like I said earlier.

Anna M's answer is very accurate, I was about to answer the same thing, In the jewish tradition, Satan never betrayed God, and his function is to just test people, for more information, you might try to reasearch on Samael that is Satan's original name.

there is no sin. Sin does not exsist except in the mind. We are all growing and becoming more pure. We are in no rush, we have as many lives as we need. Learn, grown, play, have fun. Everyone will get there, so no use labeling them sinners. That is pretty critical...

Satan only speeded the inevitable I would think. I mean how many times do we just forget we're not supposed to do something?

Yes, the reason for sin is our finitude and the fact that creation's core is nothingness.

OK maybe yes,
but it would not last, because there would no evil to keep it going.
so envy, jealousy, anger, fear, sadness, loneliness, all ther bad stuff that keeps us sinning would not be there.
so it would end with real quick.
