Hello,

That is great, that you are learning Spanish. Well alot of people say Pimsleuur is better because it is being paced. Berlitz its okay but not that popular. Another reason is that Pimsleur have different Spanish courses for different stages. There are Fast and Easy, Short course and alsoo the complete course.

Also try www.byki.com, this is a free website that you can download for free spanish lessons, which will help you out.

Rosetta Stone is an also good program as well, sort of similar to Pimsleur's

Teach yourself Spanish is also popular
Suenos
Collouiqal Spanish are also good Spanish books
It you are asking me to choose, i would have to say without a doubt Pimsleur Recorded Book, think about it, you get what yu pay for and Pimsleur is very expensive in comparison to Berlitz.

Take care and good luck

Normally I'd recommend Pimsleur by far, but if you're going for speed, Berlitz might be a better option. Pimsleur is designed for maximum retention, but because of that, you learn new words and phrases more slowly. Other programs like Berlitz or Living Language will teach you how to say more things in a shorter time, but you're likely to forget it quickly.

To be perfectly honest, you're not going to accomplish a whole lot in two weeks. If your main goal is to be able to communicate with your aunt and you already know some Spanish, your time and money would be better spent on a good phrase book and dictionary.

Pimsleur hands down if you are interested in conversational skills first and reading skills second. Rosetta Stone for example is all vocabulary and never teaches you how to form phrases in the language, how to understand natives speakers talking at normal conversational speeds, you learn random words or random catch-phrases later in the program but it's useless if you actually hope to be able to converse with natives. Pimsleur is really great in terms of acquire the core structures and vocabulary of the language, in training your ears to understand native speakers (none of the methods you list above do this and that's collectively their biggest downfall) and finally it's great to develop your pronunciation skills. It's THE method I recommend to beginners. It really starts you off on the right foot. Also note that poster "Chef" recommends you take notes while doing Pimsleur! DO NOT DO THIS! This really goes against the scientific method developed by Dr. Pimsleur. That is EXPRESSLY explained in the user's guide and on the audio. You want to actively participate orally and you don't want to take notes, use a dictionary or be distracted in any other way while doing the lessons. Pimsleur is a not a passive memorization method. You need to participate that is anticipate (start thinking in the language to form your own phrases). You can't do that if you are taking notes or looking at a dictionary. It's all explained in their user's guide. Taking notes will most likely hinder your success as determined by Paul Pimsleur during the scientific testing of his method.

cI studied Spanish many years ago in high shool. I recently bought Berlitz Intermediate Spanish to practice my conversational skills.

i listened to the tapes for a couple of hours.

Then I had reason to speak to a Spanish speaker who spoke no English. I asked her if she preferred to speak to someone who speaks a better Spanish. She said no because I was already speaking Spanish. I was so delighted. i didn't know whether to kiss her or kiss the man who sold me that BERLITZ package.

If your library has Rosetta Stone from Transparent language, that works very well (but is very expensive to buy)
