Because they think it makes them look like well rounded people, balancing career, social life and children (usually priorities in that order). They really pay no attention to their kids, then when something goes wrong, they want to blame everyone but themselves.

Although there are some families where both parents need to work it's not the majority. Things that are luxuries, young couples now think of as necessities. When our own mothers stayed home they could afford it because they would forego the luxuries. No one had their own bedroom, boys and girls doubled up. There was one TV, one stereo, no computers, etc. Today parents both work full time to pay for the McMansion that no one really lives in.
When we were growing up, vacation was a camping trip or a road trip to visit out of state relatives. Today an exotic vacation is considered a necesssity. Shall I go on?

Having childen is expensive. Especially when they whine for things like X-Box 360, Nike's, and cell phones. How else are the parents supposed to give their materialistic little brats what they demand, if they aren't slaving away for the ingrates? It's not like it used to be; both parents must now work. The rich are worse...everyone knows they usually neglect their kids more than the average working-class parents and they do it by choice. They go off on vacations, send their kids to boarding schools, or are too busy sleeping with the pool-boy or the maid. And at least employed parents aren't lazy and sponging off the government, sucking up the tax dollars of hard working citizens.

My husband and I made the decision long ago to be working parents, at first out of financial necessity and later because we wanted the extra income to put into a college fund for the kids. It's something we want to give our kids so they don't have student loans hanging over them for the rest of their lives.
I work full time, but I am fortunate to have a job with lots of flexibility so I can arrange my schedule to be with the kids as much as possible. We are also fortunate to have them in a daycare with fantastic teachers who love our kids. I don't see how it's any more beneficial to keep them home with little or no activity or interaction with other kids. Honestly, they do more at daycare as far as educational experience goes than I would ever do consistently at home. I don't pay them to raise my kids, I pay them to *help me* raise my kids. There's nothing wrong with that.

Well, a lot of people have jobs that take up most of their lives. But this can usually be worked around. Things are really expensive these days, and work is important. If I were in that position I'd make sure I had time to spend with my children. I wouldn't pop 6-8 pounds outta my crotch and spend hours in labor for nothing!

Because raising kids is really hard... so naturally, American's opt to do what's easier, rather than what will make a well-rounded person of society someday.
Then when the kid disobeys and throws tantrums and is a total freak child the parents can shrug and send em off to military school.
Let's not take responsibilty for anything! Huzzah... or something.
I agree.

I agree with this. I nanny for different families and have worked for many summer camps and this is all I see...parents too busy to have a relationship with their children, spoiling them with material things to make up for the lack of attention. The kids are left in the babybsitter's hands to be raised and disciplined and if their child is bad they blame it on the nanny. It's so sad to see kids who obviously crave their parents attention but don't get any...

Because people do something to have kids and they thin k since there "protected" that it is 100% sure that they wont have kids but they do and they are too busy with there own lives that they don't have time for their kids.

Yes yes yes and keep them home from school too. You don't want them idiots having any impression on your children either.
Hell put them in a bubble while we are at it and never let them meet any other children or adults ever again.
