Not sure if you are referring to suddenly (acute) or following long term kidney disease (chronic). Most common causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and lupus. Autoimmunity can also cause chronic kidney disease. Acute kidney failure most often occurs with drug abuse, damage to the kidney, and untreated urinary tract infection.
