GTA is correct...stands for the Greater Toronto Area. Unless they've changed it to GTO and I missed that bulletin.
Crime in Toronto is a bit higher than smaller towns in the rest of the country, but way way lower than say New York or Detroit.
You gotta know what areas to stay away from. There are, like in any city, higher crime areas. Parts in Scarborough, Mississauga, and inner city Toronto (Regent area, Jane/Finch area), even north of Toronto, like Vaughn, have their trouble spots. Mainly related to gangs/organized crime.
But most of the city is well and good. You gotta be smart and safe yourself. If you're staying at a hotel, talk to the concierge or hotel manager about your area. Toronto has a busy nightlife and many places are safe at night, but you have to know where to go and where not to step foot in, even in the day.
Happy visiting! I think it's the best city in the world!

If you look at other big cities in North America, Toronto is fairly good but we do have crime, unfortunately. However, in the past month, there have been a lot of major police raids and we seem to be doing a bit better. There are certain areas you should avoid and, if you're staying at a hotel, ask at the front desk or the concierge. If you're staying with friends, they'll know where you should avoid. The tourist attractions are fairly safe and if you want to get outside of the city, try going down to Niagara Falls and surrounding wine country.
