I have oily roots and have to wash it every day. If I don't, my hair looks gross! However, I have found using gentle shampoos helps. I try to avoid shampoos with ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients are harsh, and can strip your all of all oils. When this happens, your scalp will produce even more oils to replace them. I use a shampoo with sodium laureth sulfate (which isn't nearly as harsh as the other two), or if I can afford it I use a natural shampoo. You can find natural shampoos in a natural/health food store or online at places like http://www.drugstore.com/. Burt's Bees Super Shiny shampoo and conditioner are both great for oily hair.

Also, avoid opaque shampoos, because they contain a lot of moisturizers that will eventually build up on your hair and make it greasy. And don't use conditioner on your scalp or roots, as this will also make your hair greasy.

Baby shanpoo! It is the highest in PH of most shampoos on the market. My hair used to be really oily to and the baby shampoo worked wonders. Use the Aussie product "Knot Forgotten" if you have hair that tangles after washing and still wet, put a SMALL amount on your hair where needed, staying away from the scalp, and it will help with the tangles and moisturize your hair shafts but not your scalp and skin. It makes your hair REALLY soft too!
Stop using the combo shampoos with conditioners products you really don't need much moisturizing, and the Aussie product will add moisture to the hair itself and not "you"! Good luck!

As a teen I had REALLY oily hair. I used to rinse it in white vinegar to cut the grease! I also used Dawn dish washing liquid to wash it! That actually works really well. Also, perming helped dry it out, but you risk breakage. Color works pretty well, also. Just don't use conditioner near your scalp--only on the ends.
