Oh, but the tooth thing can be misleading if the dog is fed a lot of junk food. (I saw a 3-year old chihuahua that had only one tooth left because his owner fed him nothing but people food and garbage. Poor little dog. He was rescued, thankfully. )
Still, a vet would have the best estimate, based on teeth and other factors as well...

A good way to tell is by examining his teeth. If his teeth are pearly white then he's probably fairly young. If his teeth are broken and brown especially towards the gum, he's getting on up there in age.
