I am a freshman this year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I was planning on living at home and going to school however my parents just bought a house more then an hour away and living at home is no longer an option. When I applied for Financial Aid based on my parents income I did not qualify for any grants but did get a loan, i'm not sure which for about $1,300 a semester. My parents told me they would pay for my tuition and books (my tuition is all ready at half cost because of a scholarship). I am now in need of $7,500 for a dorm and meal ticket so I can live on campus, I am only 17 so I need a cosigner on a student loan and my parents won't cosign using the excuse that they have too many loans with the debt/owe ratio. Where can I go and what can I do?

I work directly with financial aid in my profession...you need to ask the school about the possibility of obtaining the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, and talk with your parents about possibly doing the Parent Plus loan (I know that you said they won't help you with a loan, but it really is one of the best ways to help you with your expenses) From the federal govt. perspective, parents are still responsible for helping their child with financial aid until you reach one of those 7 milestones on the FAFSA. There are some other independent lending agencies (Wells fargo, City Bank, Sallie Mae) but many of these will require a co signer....e-mail me if you have any other questions.....

Well, go to dorm officials and ask about other options. You are too young to get a loan on your own so that is why you need a co-signer, as you already know this. Your parents are good to you by paying your tuition and books. Some don't get even that.

Maybe you can stay on an off campus housing. Maybe in a private home.

But don't give up hope, cause you are not the only one with this problem and schools are equiped with helping young adults get funding to recieve an education.

Keep pressuring your parents to cosign for the loan. Tell them you don't want to work your first year since you want to study hard and do well. Who sent your Dad to college? If he's wealthy, you can't get much financial aid anyway. So if he is remind him of this. Learn how to be a salesman. It's the easiest way to get money. Beats working by plenty. You can live off campus with several roommates and prepare your own food, but you won't save that much since it's unlikely you know much about cooking nutritious foods that are easy to prepare.
Most college kids live on fast food and ramen noddles. If Dad remains a tightwad, get a job and pay for it yourself. Talk to your Grandparents on your Dad's side. Tell him how expensive college is today and what a cheap skate your Dad is. Do the same with Mom's parents. With five people pestering Dad he'll pay up. You got to get tough in the money game. Why wait for the old fool to croak before you get his money. You need it now when you're trying to better yourself. You only want him to cosign not pay for the whole thing. Keep nagging that they made the choice to move for their own selfish reason leaving you in the lurch. Complain to all of your friends, Dad and Mom's friends. You'll get to him and if you don't you've lost little.

i'd start up with the hyperlink less than. i believe you need to fill out the FASFA and verify you mark the field that shall we them comprehend you've an interest in student Loans. definite, you're prepared to apply the loan money for issues except college. the school of decision will take out the registration prices, and also you'll get a examine with the "left over" quantity for use at your discretion. they'll say that you'll deliver decrease back inspite of you do not use, yet in case you'd be wanting money for lease and food, than that isn't practice. I had student loans (at the moment repaying) for more effective or less a three hundred and sixty 5 days and a 1/2. It helped out plenty!

Quit going to a university and just go to a community college. You can have more money to spend if you go there.
