Just-Me, shad isn't neccesarily a live bait. Think of shad, which is what I use for catfish. I cut it up in chunks and cast off! Simple!

Shad sides or shad strips are great catfish bait. Part of the reason that they work so well is due to the fact that they stink terribly. Catfish seek out food mostly by sense of smell, so the smellier the bait, the better the like it. Most of the time I use commercially prepared shad, but I have found that in a pinch, catching a few small perch or bluegill and letting them sit for a few hours in a minnow pail will work nearly as well. Use rubber gloves when handling stinkbait or your hands will smell for days.

shad is a live bait. some hook them through the dorsal fin area, but i've found they last longer if hooked through the lip.
