We had started plans to get married 6/7/08. When we were out with his mom, she kept making remarks like she hopes she is still here to see it. Since both of my parents are deceased and his father passed away about 2 yrs ago, she's all we have left and this really upset him. Now he wants to get married in fall of 07. Does anyone have any ideas for me for a wedding or reception? She'd like us to be married in church, which I don't mind, but we are trying to cut costs because I have 3 kids from a previous marriage and a home I'm still trying to take care of. I want this to be nice for him, it's his 1st time. The first time I was married my parents took care of everything, so I really don't have a clue where to begin. I live in Illinois. Thanks..

We were getting married regardless. We had the later date to save up more money. I just don't have very much saved up yet,(about 1500. so far), and every where I call wants like a years notice and a deposit. That's why the crunch.

While I do not have a sugguestion on a place (because I'm in Texas) I will tell you that you should be able to get it done with a small budget and dont worry. Here are a few cost saving things, try looking now, for things. Plan ahead and do not procrastinate. You can find nice things (though you wouldnt necessarily think so) on www.orientaltrading.com. I do not know what you want in terms of flowers, but I got mine at www.growingtulips.com and they are being shipped from the Netherlands. I will have to arrange them, but that's about as simple as wrapping some ribbon around the stems and inserting some pins. You could do it. Invitations are usually pretty expensive. You could do the print them yourself ones you buy, or you could choose to be even cheaper and do them yourself completely. I did and they were great. In order to do them, I used white cardstock ($4 at Walmart for 250 sheets and I got 4 on each 8 1/2 x 11) and for the vellum over the top (I used tracing paper $4 for 30 sheets, again 4 out of each sheet) and I embossed wedding bells on the vellum ($19 embossing gun - borrow one- $1 stamp and $3 silver embossing powder) and I tied the vellum to the cardstock with ribbon ($3 hole punch and $3 for ribbon). It was that simple. I spent a little extra and added a cute picture of us under the vellum attached to the cardstock.

The first thing you should look into whether you move the date up or not is the church. If you are both baptized as Catholic and want to be married in a Catholic church, sometimes, you need to attend classes for couples given by the church. These classes can last up to a year. This might be the same for any church.
One perk of getting married in a church is that some of them have separate halls for receptions and offer it at a discount or free. Look into it.

A wedding or reception will only tke as much money as you allow it. Make a budget, set an amount that you are comfortable with and stick with it. The thing about church weddings, is that the church is usually already pretty so you dont need much decoration. Buy latex or silk flowers, they are usually cheaper than buying fresh ones. The most importyant thing when your shopping on a budget is you may have to really look for your bargains, get sombody to help you and you could make it a fun event for you kids by including them as well.

If you move the date, it will still give you a year to plann and save.
You can start by booking the church. If you or you mother-in-law belong to a church, that will cut the costs big time. Youc an borroe things that the church already has. Book now since summer is a high wedding season.
Go to after'season sales. Depending of your theme and color patterns, you can use the after season sales to stock up on item you might wanna use for decorations or party favours. You can use after 4th of July, Haloween. Thanksgiving and Christmas after season sales and look for bargains.
Congrats and good luck

It'll take forever to save enough money but it sounds like 2008 is too long. Is there any way you can make it simple but pretty, like get married in a friend's beautiful back yard and the reception at their house, still have the dress and photographer?

I think you should get married when your husband, not because I'm the same gender but us men sometimes have "cold feet" which means the later the better.
