Bad transmission, or if a manual, bad clutch could be the problem

Is it a manual transmission or automatic? If it is manual, are you pushing down on the shift to get it into reverse? If it is automatic, does the shifter not go into the reverse position, or is it going into the reverse position but the car is not responding? You should have your foot on the brake when shifting to reverse with an automatic. Do you do that?
