Believe it or not, toothpaste is not the most important element when it comes to cleaning your teeth. The brush and your technique are far more important. What you are trying to accomplish is to dislodge the plaque that has formed on the surfaces of your teeth, just under your gums, and between your teeth. Check out this site for information on the best technique - http://www.simplestepsdental.com/SS/ihtSS/r.WSIHW000/st.31843/t.31879/pr.3.html. Most people make the mistake of scrubbing too hard, which can cause your gums to erode and doesn't get the job done. If you brush and floss your teeth correctly, you don't really even need toothpaste. But most of us like it because it makes our breath feel fresh. So you only need a little bit to freshen your breath. Filling the whole brush with toothpaste doesn't make your teeth any cleaner.

RE:
How much toothpaste should an adult use on a toothbrush?
I put a pea size on my brush, while my boyfriend fills the whole top of his brush with toothpaste. I think he uses WAY too much toothpaste on his brush (we're already out and I just bought a tube recently).

My daughter is five and just recently started using regular toothpaste on occasion. She doesn't all the time but I'd say once or twice a week. She was getting the yellowing with no cavities as well and I didn't want it to go into that. Just watch her and make her spit rather than swallow. My daughter would also get horrid breath and the mint of the regular toothpaste was better than the bubble gum or whatever flavor it is at freshening her breath.

i use a pea-sized amount. But I also use a bit more because I like the flavor! I use vanilla-mint,and citrus too ( not together,of course!) and I don't like cinnamon. I havent tried the lemon yet,but I wanted to try the berry punch, and crest pulled it. I would use a pea-sized amount, maybe a little more. The laying- down- on- the- brush- S shape that a popular toothpaste uses is actually a waste, I think.

My daughter started using regular toothpast when she was 1 1/2 and she had bad breath. I brushed her teeth for her so she didnt swallow it. She used the flavored kind for a while then I recently switched to regular toothpaste. She told me it burned the first time she used it but she never mentioned it again. She likes the minty burn. No yellow teeth, no cavities.

According to most toothpaste tubes, a "pea-size" is what to use for small children. Adults have a larger mouth and need more to adequately cover their teeth.

I think you should use a good amount, like filling the whole toothbrush, because otherwise you wont have enough toothpaste to clean your teeth.
