I would probably get a mix just because thats what I'm used to, my last dog was a blacklab/germanshepherd. I think Im leaning toward a germanshepherd/bordercollie mix. What is your opinions about this and these following dog breeds: Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Border Collie, and Australian Shepherd?? thanks!

With a mixed breed, you can never be sure what kind of temperament you're going to end up with. That's why I like the purebreds.

Goldens are usually easy to train, but they can be rambunctious until they're about two. Great with kids, not very good in the watchdog department.

German Shepherds can be great dogs, but if poorly bred they are prone to hip dysplasia and fear biting. They may also be too aggressive for the average family - they may bite your kids friends if there's a squabble.

I don't recommend Border Collies to 99% of the pet owners in the world. They are high-intensity, high-drive working dogs. They require a LOT of exercise, and preferably a job to do or they can be insane to live with. We're talking at least two thirty minute STRENUOUS runs every day, not a casual 3 mph walk around the block. Many Border Collies end up in the pound because people can't deal with their herding instincts, car chasing and odd behavior (like guarding pots and pans!)

Australian Shepherds are usually great dogs and very easy to train. They do need a good daily run, but they don't have the psychotic intensity of the Border Collie. If you have a lot of kids running around, you might have a problem with the dog nipping them. Might be too much into barking if you live in an apartment. I've got a friend who has three of them and I'm considering one for my next dog.

Make sure you go to a good private breeder and see at least one of the parents. The pups temperament is going to be very similar.

Keep her out of the dog park and just socialize her with dogs you know are nice to her. Find a puppy kindergarten class and ask if they have a supervised play group: it's a much safer way to give your dog play time with other dogs, because every owner is there and the trainers are supervising. When she's old enough, usually at 6 months, enroll her in basic obedience class.

golden retrievers and border collies are awsome. i think it would be hard to go wrong if you got one of those or a mix with one of those breeds part of the mix, but only if you arnt planning to have an inside dog. I havnt had much experience with German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds.

Hey it's Romy with the dogs in the back of a truck, remember?
Anyway this is regarding my question. Dogs are smarter than human beings I see that on the answers of my question. And for your info, tail gates, can you explain to me how they will keep a dog inside if an accident occurs or they have to slam the brakes or swerve?. And yes, I rather have my dog in a crate/cage, knowing that he is still there when I arrive and not dead. You and other people who don't care about dogs, should never own one.

Don't worry about breeds that your new mongrel will possess. Trust me, if you go to shelters/rescues, looking for a mix of just those breeds, you could miss out on a great mongrel that would be perfect for you, but doesn't consist of those breeds.

I like mixed breeds better. Last dog I had was a shepherd/husky mix. It was medium in size.
