No joke, Joe? What is the name of the wine? That will determine if it is age-able enough to have lasted this long. Most wines are not built to last that long, especially whites. From that time frame, if it's not French, or a top-end California Cabernet, chances are not good. Plus, a fridge is a bad place to store wine long-term, because it is not humid enough, and therefore wine will slowly evaporate through the cork, damaging the wine that remains behind (the process is called "ullage"). Here's how to check, without opening the bottle: Stand up the bottle and look at how high the wine goes over the "shoulder" of the bottle. If the wine is not at the top of the shoulder, or, ideally, up into the neck, it is likely damaged from "ullage." Also, do not open it very long before drinking it; older wines are very fragile and exposure to air will only accelerate the negative aspects of the aging process.

From a wine consultant:
I would open it the day before and see if it has turned...that's the only way you'll know. If it has turned, then go buy another bottle. Depending on where it is from, 1976 was a good year in some countries.

Not all wine ages well. They only way to know if your is still 'good' is to open it and see.
If it was an expensive wine at the time ($20+), try looking it up on the Internet to see if you can find anything about it. I'd hate for you to get bad advice here and be cracking a $1000 bottle of wine to eat with pizza.

You seem to have some good feedback already. Not all wines keep well. Besides no matter what wine it is, even if it is a good 1975 Bordeaux of a '78 Californian Red they require drinking soon. (I know that you wouldn't store a red in the fridge normally). A white Sauternes was very good that year but again requires drinking soon.
Of course if it were a Black Tower or Blue Nun you're up the creek and I wouldn't bother opening it.

I would try it anyway, but it would be a good idea to go out and buy another bottle in case its not any good. It would not be very impressive to have bad wine then no back up.

Wine in the fridge? Didn't the bottle brake?
Please, buy something safe to offer to your lady and try alone if the bottle you keep is still OK, if it is, you may offer her, too!

Both you and the wine have aged considerably in the intervening years.. I fear the result will be negative even with the old wine.
