Go to this site:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm

If you have Windows Media 7.1 and better go here to get the codec:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx

Download codec that your media player supports and then you need to be able to set that file to use media player instead.

Go to any of your folders in your C local drive. Click on TOOLS then FOLDER OPTIONS. You will see file types. Go to that tab and make your avi files use media center. You can change the option to how you want the file to open and with what software.

One of the easiest ways to aquire the codecs needed are to download all of the popular players, Windows Media player, Real player, and Quicktime. The AVI file format is usually played using Quicktime.
